Mathare Children in class

The Centre

The Loving Concern Education Centre

Like many primary schools throughout Africa, The LC Education Centre was founded by a missionary group. The school is the only resource available to the quarter of a million people who call this section of the Mathare Slum home.

The Mathare slum has a population of approximately 800,000 people 80% under the age of 18 years.  Most of these people live on less than $1.00 per day. The UN has divided up all of the Mathare slum, for reference purposes, into what they refer to as “villages”.  Mathare south, where the school is located is referred to as “Village #1”.

This school and centre represents more than a learning institution. It represents hope, encouragement, and is a strong source of support for the Community.  It is a “safe “ refuge.  Many of the students go to the building on the weekends and stay late after school is over, knowing they have a safe place. Young girls are particularly vulnerable in this impoverished slum and can find some protection through the school.

The missionaries left the school and Mathare when they could not make a living operating a slum school.  A young pastor and his wife could not abandon the then 300 children and decided to stay & run the school. For four years, Pastor Luke and Rose managed to keep the school open without any help or donors.  The situation became untenable. This is when Project Chance Africa became involved.
